South America is at first glance not a place for tours where you want to admire winter scenery.

However, there is a special place in Argentina called Los Glaciares National Park, an area with beautiful nature such as Magellanic subpolar forests, Steppe, mountains and numerous glacial lakes, including Lake Argentino (160 km long).

Los Glaciares National Park is located in the region called Patagonia (a thinly populated area shared by Argentina and Chile).

Also, the name Los Glaciares takes its name from a huge number of glaciers situated there.

And these glaciers are the reason why tourists visit this place. You do not need to travel to Antarctica to see the parts of a glacier falling into the sea.

There are several types of activity to explore this Park.

you can choose one or multiple day ice hiking or trekking. You can even join the expedition to the Southern Patagonian Ice Cape.

You should be warned that it is not a tropical region and the temperature may vary from 0.6 °C (33.1 °F) in winter to 13.4 °C (56.1 °F) in summer. Snowfall is not a rare phenomenon in this part of the world.

As you can see this place reminds the famous cartoon The Ice Age. And who knows maybe you will meet a crazy squirrel with a nut.

Now as climate changes constantly Los Glaciares becomes a very popular place among tourists who want to feel and touch enormous pieces of ice in one place.

Ice covers about 30% of the territory of the park. There are about 356 glaciers, so you will need more time than one day to explore at least some of them.

You don’t have to visit each and every glacier, the most visited and well known among them is Perito Moreno. It was named after a famous explorer and it covers the area of 250 square km.

It is also available for hiking.

The Peaks

Tourists from all over the world come to Los Glaciares National Park for peaks and trekking as well.

You should pay attention to granite peaks of Mount Fitz Roy.

The indigenous tribe that lived there called it the peak of fire.

Now the peak has the name of the sea captain who brought Charles Darwin here in 1834.

However, it is extremely difficult to climb here. And it is possible to do climbing only once a year.

The Lakes

There are too big milky lakes in Los Glaciares National Park. The lakes obtained white-blue color due to melting water from glaciers which are the source of water for the lakes.

If you come here, just for beautiful scenery you should take photos of these white lakes as they look like milky rivers from the tales.

Infrastructure is very developed here. The biggest city with an airport is

El Calafate. It is worth spending a day here the city is pretty small, but it can offer a good range of bars and restaurants. Also, Perito Moreno Glacier is only within one hour’s distance from this place.
